Even though it’s been nine months, it seems like just yesterday when a Metro North train derailed in the Bronx, killing four and injuring 19. The wreck was supposed to spur safety measures in MTA and NYC transit, but there does not seem to be any improvement.
On Saturday, a Metro North train derailed in the Bronx. While the accident did not cause any injuries or deaths, it marked the tenth MTA derailment in less than two years.
The latest Bronx MTA derailment occurred on a curve in the tracks. A spokesperson said the car hopped the tracks. It was toting heavy rocks so it is possible that the train was overloaded. Another factor could be speed.
Other causes of train derailments include:
- Failure to maintain railroad tracks
- Collisions with other trains
- Collisions with motor vehicles
- Drowsy or drugged operators
- Insufficient training and supervision of crew
- Improper maintenance of train engines or rail cars
When a train or subway accident causes harm or death in New York City, both federal and local authorities will launch an investigation. While these investigations are aimed to identify the cause of the derailment and prevent it in the future, the regulators’ interests do not always align with the victims’.
