Infant products must be designed with a meticulous focus on safety. Yet, every year babies needlessly die because manufacturers fail to create their products in a safety-minded manner.
Even if the dangerous children’s product is recalled from store shelves, it remains a threat as people sell it second-hand or give it away to friends and family members – unaware that the product has been recalled.
One of these products, the Nap Nanny infant recliner, was recently involved in an infant’s death for the sixth time. This time, an 8-month-old New Jersey girl was found dead, trapped between the recliner and the side of her crib.
The product was recalled in 2013, but 165,000 of these recliners were sold between 2009 and 2012. Many Nap Nanny recliners are still out there and in use.
The Nap Nanny manufacturer, now out of business, insists that the product is safe when used as instructed. The company says it never intended its product to be used inside a crib. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) disagrees, urging parents to destroy and discard the Nap Nanny so no more infants will needlessly die.
